Water Heater Leaking: What Should You Do?
A water heater leak may seem like a minor nuisance, but it can turn into a bigger problem if you are not careful. Even the smallest amount of water can damage to your floors, sub-floors, and walls. But it’s important to keep in mind that a water heater leak can be a system of a much larger problem. The worst-case scenario, a complete water heater could cause you a significant flood that will lead to personal property damage and possibly a hefty repair bill. A water heater leak will only get worse, so the best course of action is to act quickly. Here are some tips to help you get to the source of the problem.
1. Determine Whether Your Water Heater is the Source of the Leak
Sometimes a small puddle of water at the base of a water heater is not necessarily due to a leak. A water heater and the pipes can typically form condensation which can accumulate and drip to the floor. Other causes of the leak could be furnace drain lines, water softener discharge lines, and even other plumbing.
2. Turn Off the Power to Your Water Heater
If you have determined that your water heater is leaking, then one of the first things you do is turn off the power supply.
3. Turn Off the Water Supply
If leaking is significant and obvious, turn off the water supply at the cold water shut-off valve. Most water heaters have a valve located above the water heater that will shut of the water supply. Before closing the valve make sure you can get to it safely without having to come in contact with any water. If the leak is large and serious where you can not reach the water shut-off valve safely then you should find the main shut-off valve to stop the water supply from going to your water heater.
