Tips for Identifying Toilet Leaks

When it comes to toilet leaks, the first thing you should check is the water level inside the toilet tank. Every toilet should have an overflow tube, therefore if the water is too high or the ballcock is out of adjustment the water will constantly spill over into the tube, which is wasting water right down the drain. There are two solutions that may be able to fix the problem. If your ballcock is fairly new all it may need is a little adjustment. However, if you have an older ballcock that won’t adjust properly it may need to simply be replaced altogether. Otherwise to check for leaks in the toilet place a few drops of food coloring in the tank. If after a few minutes the color is leaking into the bowl that may mean that the flush valve and or flapper is leaking. This could mean that the chain is too tight, which leaves the flapper slightly open to leaving water leaking out of the tank or the flapper could simply be broken.
