5 Plumbing Tips for a Stress-Free Christmas

With the holidays in full swing, no one wants, let alone has the time to deal with a sudden plumbing emergency. End unwanted stress this Christmas by simply taking a few preventative measures.

1. Fix the Drips
Even if you know that pressing down on the faucet handle will prevent drips or that jiggling a toilet handle to make it stop running, your guess will most likely forget even if you do tell them. A huge water bill can really put a damper on holiday shopping and vacation plans. So, repair these types of drips before it gets the best of your holiday season.
2. Prevent Drain Clogs
One of the biggest problems you may face during the holidays is a pesky drain clog that’s impossible for you to clear. To prevent these kinds of clogs, it’s important to make sure that you and your guests follow a few simple rules. If your cooking this holiday, it’s important to remember never to use the drain for disposal. Stringy vegetables, peels, grease, and oils are all known to cause clogs.
3. Insulate the Pipes
Think of it this way, your pipes are like the human body. They require protection when exposed to the cold temperatures because the water in them can freeze. To prevent your pipes from becoming a horrible mess, wrap your pipes in insulation sleeves to help create a barrier against the cold.
4. Maintain Indoor Temperature
Insulation is not the only thing that is going to prevent frozen pipes this winter. If you will be leaving your home for only a few hours makes sure to 55 F and open the doors to under the sink, so that the heat reaches the pipes.
5. Drain the Water
If you will be leaving your home for a matter of days or longer than the best way to prevent a disaster is to maintain a warmer indoor temperature. You can do this by making sure that there is no water in the pipes. Also, drain your water heater and turn off its power supply. When you have finally finished, shut off the water leading to all the toilets, faucets, and lastly the water valves.
